When his wife, Rana, is attacked in their new apartment, Emad is set on a long slow revenge that inevitably ends in tragedy. As matters of conscience and social pressure tighten the noose on a set of well-drawn characters, this becomes a masterclass in complex moral questioning. Gently ratcheting up the tension with some deft narrative moves Farhadi gives his superb cast full rein to create a serious reflection on guilt and shame, trust and forgiveness.
