WOW FILM CLUB and GENTLE/RADICAL invite you to a Halloween night of food, short films and discussion for and about young people. We want to start a conversation about what young people want to see happening in our city.
How do we make spaces for you as young people?
How does our culture reflect and support you?
How can your voices be heard, how can adults listen?
This event is a chance for young people, and those who work with you, to get together and discuss what a radical future for young people might look like.
It's Halloween, so our film shorts are themed around some scary stuff: ghosts, ghouls, but also some of the scary things young people are facing today - from police checks to lack of job opportunities, from body image to Islamaphobia...
This get together is about watching short films, sharing food, and discussing your aspirations, frustrations, and how to deal with the challenges of living in a society that doesn't know how to value your voice
All young people welcome (that means up to 25, and we're flexible if you're a little older!)
6.00pm - 9.00pm, Wednesday November 1st
Riverside Warehouse
56 Machen Place, Riverside CF11 6EQ
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU'RE ATTENDING so we get enough food in (food will be Halal).

Gentle/Radical and WOW Film Club are delighted to host their first ‘people’s symposium', bringing together archival films, invited speakers and panel discussion around two key footnotes in British colonial history: the Partition of India in 1947, and the Palestinian 'Nakba' ('Catastrophe') of 1948.
2017 marks the 70th anniversary of Indian Independence, and the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. On the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday, this symposium invites you to remember less visible tragedies in our colonial history, as they relate to South Asia and the Middle East.
A free screening of a classic Taiwanese-language film, The Bride Who Has Returned from Hell.
Made in 1965 and adapted from Victoria Holt’s novel, Mistress of Mellyn, this film embodies the Taiwanese-language film industry’s enthusiasm for exploring new stories, fresh elements, and foreign influences. The ‘who-done-it’ narrative combines family melodrama’s rifts, risks, and restoration of domestic order with suspense, mystery, romantic entanglement, and supernatural elements of Gothic romance. Highly enjoyable.
The event will be introduced by Dr Ming-Yeh Rawnsley (SOAS, University of London). There will also be a post-screening discussion with Ms Teresa Huang, Director of Restoration, Taiwan Film Institute.
After a sell out screening at Buteown Community Centre in June, we're excited to be returning in October for Black History Month, with a women-only screening of the acclaimed DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST. This film was the first to be made by a Black woman in America, and the inspiration behind Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade.'
Set in 1902, it looks at the lives of three generations of Gullah Geechee women as they prepare to leave their home on the shores of Carolina. The ‘Gullah’, as they are known, are descendants of enslaved people, whose rich language and culture is composed of different West African origins which has survived centuries. Criticially praised for its rich language, use of song, and visual imagery, this is a Black feminist classic, not to be missed.
To kick off the screening, we'll be showing short extracts from Beyonce's critially acclaimed 'Lemonde' which took drew inspiration from Daughters of the Dust.
And we invite all women, as always, to come and join us for what promises to be an inspiring event, with refreshments and discussion.

Beautifully made, perfectly judged in every way, Kaurasmaki’s wonderfully droll humour is perfectly suited to this sweet story of a Syrian refugee taken in by the good people of Helsinki. Both hysterical and heartbreaking, this charming, humane comedy is enough to give you hope!
“the warmest, most life-enhancing film I've seen this year.” David Gillam, WOW Film Festival Director
Winner Silver Bear for Best Director Berlin International Film Festival 2017

CASA media present three inspiring short films made with young people in West Wales and Zanzibar and funded by Hub Cymru Africa and Welsh Government. Children from both countries participated in climate change and sustainability workshops as well as film making sessions.
Bold, brave and brilliant, this wise, sad and funny film captures Cuba at a critical moment in its history. Deserted by his wife, rejected by his lover, and sceptical of the promises of a new Cuba, Sergio feels alone in a brave new world, unable either to leave or to come to terms with the changes after the revolution.
