"From my own childhood the film that always jumps to mind is The Incredible Journey, faithfully adapted from Sheila Burnford’s book, and later made as the much cutesier Homeward Bound. No talking animals on this one, just the camera following the three extraordinary animals through the Canadian wilderness, in an almost wordless narrative. Most recently the Italian, Red as the Sky (Rosso Come il Cielo) has every child and adult I have shown it to entranced. I don’t understand why it was never distributed here! Both are available on DVD."
WOW shares a common aim with Small World Cinema, which is to broaden the range of films available to children and families. In the 2014 festival we're screening Moon Man, a quirky animation from France, described by The Guardian as "a sweet and eccentric alternative to Hollywood children's fare". If you have kids of your own, don't miss out!
